Pylon Peak Track is so named because of power pylon remnants from a line connecting the old early 1900’s Horahora hydro-electric power station with the gold mines in Waihi and Karangahake Gorge, some 80km away.
After crossing the Waiorongomai Stream, ascend about 660m via the Pylon Peak Track on the southern side of the valley, and out onto the top of the Kaimai Range. Continue along the spectacular Kaimai Ridgeway to the head of the valley, and return to the carpark via the historic mining tracks in the Waiorongomai valley. Gorgeous bush and sweeping views on both sides of the ranges – if the weather is kind.
Good fitness level required for the uphill, a sturdy pair of walking boots or shoes and plenty of food and water to last the day. Bring wet weather gear, sunblock and sunhat, and your own first aid kit.
Please note: If the weather is unfavourable we will do a modified walk in the valley.
