ECHO WALKING FESTIVAL - Either Way - It's over the Top
Wednesday 12 April 2017, from 07:15am

This is an east-west  or west-east crossing of the Kaimai range following the Tuahu track.  From Katikati , the walk starts at the car park at the end of Hot Springs Road, a well-benched and graded track winds through attractive native forest featuring young kauri rickers and juvenile rimu trees.

After the turnoff for the Tuahu Kauri Track, the path soon crosses the Te Rereatukahia Stream and climbs on a moderate grade through a number of gullies to meet the North South Track at the Tuahu Saddle.  The path travels along the western escarpment of the Kaimai range offering views of the Waikato, also visible are the Killarney Lakes below.

The track descends gradually until it meets the Waihou Valley Pine Forest, leaving the Forest Park.  The track follows access roads through the forest for 1 hour to Wairakau Road.

From Te Aroha the walks starts at Wairakau Road and has a gentle strat through forestry land befre a short , sharp climb leads into a gentler climb to the top and teh North South track crossing.

Transport to the start of each walk is provided and both groups should complete the walk in time for a relaxing dip in a hot pool  (optional extra)
