Indoor Bowler Believes In Starting Them Young

A misconception about indoor bowls is that it is a sport for the older generation. But Neville Lowe said more and more young people are getting involved.

The Te Aroha Indoor Bowling Association president believes it is important to get children around 10-years-old interested in the sport.

"The national association was pushing for teenagers to get involved but I said it is better to get them (children) when they still want to be around their parents."

Mr Lowe coaches children at Stanley Avenue School twice a week and St Joseph's (Te Aroha) once a week.

"They just love it. It gives them confidence. I had one little girl who had no confidence at all when she first started and just last week she won a speech competition."

Mr Lowe was approached six years ago by a teacher aide from Stanley Avenue School to teach students for a winter games competition they were having.

After that he approached the school, asking if he was able to get a set of bowls and a mat would he be able to coach on a regular basis.

"That was how it got started and it just grew from there," Mr Lowe said. "We now have Manawaru School involved and are just organising to get Elstow-Waihou Combined School on board."

He said if the children get involved, then hopefully their parents will be interested as well.

"Children will encourage their parents to get involved. It is the cheapest sport in the country. All you need is a flat pair of shoes."
