Apprenticeships are more important than ever, says Matamata-Piako Mayor Hugh Vercoe. "We need qualified people to help lead the way forward in the district."
Mr Vercoe was speaking at council's industry training graduation last Wednesday evening in Matamata, which saw 47 people receive certificates in front of an audience of more than 200. Backgrounding the initiative, he said mayors in the Waikato had previously met and identified that young people were leaving school and not going on to job training. "It was a total waste of a valuable resource."
The Mayors Taskforce for Jobs was formed which is now looking at all age groups.
