Band Taking David Places

ON TOUR: David Langlands, left, with The Eternal.

From Waihou Primary to the Darkside Club in Finland, it's been some sort of musical journey for David Langlands.

The bass guitarist from Piako is on a world tour with Australian doom metal outfit The Eternal. They are due to play tonight in Helsinki.

His mother, Morrinsville College deputy principal Marian Fogarty, said David's interest in music started at the former Waihou Primary (now Elstow-Waihou Combined School).

Principal Ian Duncan and teacher Karen McAskie "really pushed music". David learnt guitar at Te Aroha College through the music itinerant scheme. While at secondary school he also entered the smokefreerockquest, making the Waikato finals. While studying law and political science at Victoria University in Wellington, he set up another band.

David completed his Bachelor of Arts in political science but with about a year to go on his law degree decided he needed to see a bit more of the world and left for Melbourne in February 2007. Ms Fogarty said since moving to Australia he has been working in the hospitality industry, mainly as a chef, and also dabbled in graphic design.

He was given the opportunity to audition for The Eternal and has been with the four-piece band for the past year. "He would love the music to be full-time and there is some chance of that when he returns (from the current tour)," said Ms Fogarty. "But in the meantime he is enjoying the experience."

The tour started in Adelaide on February 21, taking in Japan, Europe, Canada, the United States and Mexico, ending on May 29 in Hollywood. Ms Fogarty said when David gets back there are plans to record another album plus the possibility of further trips to Japan.
